The purpose of the Annual Sectoral Survey (ESA) is to observe the different activities performed by companies by breaking down their turnover into activities (sectoral classification) and thereby deducing their principal activity (APE). The ESA is also used to observe the legal restructuring that affects the lives of businesses, fill in certain parts of the tax forms relating to investment, notably intangible investment, and to describe the principal characteristics of each economic sector.

This deals with the economic sectors of trade, services, the agri-food industries, forestry and sawmills, transport and the building industry. All sizes of businesses are covered by the scope of the survey.

The survey has initially been conducted by mail. It will subsequently be possible to respond on the internet. It will be available form in 2013. The annual data on the year N is collected in several waves between February and June of the year N+1 in order to take account of businesses' different financial year end dates.
The survey was conducted for the first time in 2009 on the financial data of 2008. The ESA has replaced the annual business surveys (EAE) on the fields of trade, services, the agri-food industries, building industry, transport, forestry and sawwmills.

The sampling base is defined in the same way as the sampling base of the annual business surveys (EAE) was until 2008. The sampling is also based on the same major principles as those applied to the EAE (sample stratified according to the size classes crossed with the economic sectors).
