Social security benefits and the tax burden reduced the income gap in the population. In 2012, social security benefits (family allowance, basic welfare benefits and housing benefit) contributed a little less than two thirds to this reduction and the tax burden a little more than a third, mostly through income tax. Compared to 2011, the contribution of taxes to reducing the income gap rose by 2 points, owing mainly to a large increase in income tax revenues.
