Objectifs :

The main objectives of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) are to measure the economic weight of innovation in France, by  providing quantitative information on the frequency of innovation in enterprises (in terms of number of companies per business sector and size class), by providing information on innovation expenditures, and by describing the different aspects of the innovation process (innovation activities, cooperation, public financial support etc.)

CIS is the main statistical source on enterprise innovations in France and in Europe.

CIS depends on the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) n° 995/2012 of 26 October 2012 laying down detailed rules for the implementation of Decision No 1608/2003/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the production and development of Community statistics on science and technology.

Périodicité de l'opération :

This survey takes place every two years and covers a three-year period. CIS2016 covers the three years 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Période et mode de collecte :

The CIS2016 survey is conducted between May and December 2017.

The survey mainly takes place on internet. However, a paper response is also possible, when the respondent asks for it.

Historique :

The survey is coordinated in the European framework in accordance with Decision No 1608/2003 / EC on Community statistics on science and technology and Regulation No 995/2012 in force.

The first French CIS took place in 1993 and focused on product and process innovation in the manufacturing sector. It was carried out until 2005 every 4 years (1997, 2001, 2005) and then every 2 years( 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013). As of 2009, additional modules appear, varying from one edition to the next: a module on innovations with environmental benefits for CIS2008 and CIS2014, skills and creativity for CIS2010, public procurement and companies strategies to achieve their objectives for CIS2012.

Plan de sondage :

The CIS2016 sample comes from the statistical register SIRUS.

The sample consists of approximately 23,000 units. It includes an exhaustive part (legal units with 250 people or more). The sampling plan is stratified by business sector and size class for the other units.

Méthodologie :
