Sharp year-on-year increase in business births from July to September 2026 Enterprise births - September 2026
In raw data, the cumulative number of business births from July to September 2026 increased sharply compared with the same period a year earlier: +45,500, representing +16.0%. Births of conventional sole proprietorships increased sharply (+23.2%), as did micro-entrepreneur registrations (+18.6%). Company births also increased, though to a lesser extent (+6.2%).

Business support activities drive the rise in business births over three months
Over the last three months, the sector contributing the most to the year-on-year increase was business support activities (+12,400 business births compared with the same period a year earlier, corresponding to a contribution* of +4.4 points). Within this sector, business births increased particularly in “routine cleaning of buildings” activities (+4,400 business births). Among other sectors contributing to the increase, trade came next (+10,700 business births, contributing +3.8 percentage points) followed by information and communication (+10,000 business births; +3.5 percentage points). Conversely, financial and insurance activities contributed the most negatively (-1,100 business births, corresponding to a contribution of -0.4 points).
Among conventional sole proprietorships, the unusual increase was driven by the trade sector, particularly door-to-door selling (+3,500 business births).

Sharp year-on-year increase in business births over the last twelve months
In raw data, the total number of business births over the last twelve months (October 2025 to September 2026) also increased sharply: +12.2% compared with the same period a year earlier. Micro-entrepreneur registrations increased sharply (+15.0%) and births of conventional sole proprietorships increased markedly (+7.6%), as did company births (+6.6%).

Slower increase in business births in September
In September 2026, the total number of business births, across all types of businesses and in seasonally and working-day adjusted data, slowed down over a month (+1.1% after +7.2% in August). At 119,300, business births reached their highest level since INSEE began measuring them in January 2000. Births of conventional sole proprietorships continued to increase sharply (+11.6% after +10.5%), company births accelerated (+5.0% after +3.5%), while micro-entrepreneur registrations fell back (-1.6% after +8.1%).

Revisions
For August 2026, the monthly change in the total number of business births (all legal forms combined) was revised upwards by 0.7 points, due to the revision of the raw data and the updating of the seasonal and working-day adjustment coefficients: it now stands at +7.2% versus +6.5% in the previous release.

* A sector’s contribution measures the extent to which it contributes to the overall increase or decrease, based on its evolution and its weight in the total.
The series on business births is compiled from the information system on business demography (SIDE). This information system is fed by data from Sirene and enriched with information from the Sirus statistical register.
The concept of business creation published by INSEE is based on the definition established by Eurostat in order to harmonise and compare European data. A business creation in the Eurostat sense corresponds to the emergence of a market-oriented and productive legal unit with no predecessor. This concept of creation aims to measure the establishment of new means of production.
The business creation statistics distinguish requests for the creation of sole proprietorships under the micro-entrepreneur scheme. The term “classic sole proprietorships” refers to sole proprietorships excluding micro-entrepreneurs, while “classic businesses” refers to all businesses excluding micro-entrepreneurs.
Changes by sector of activity are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall change in the number of business births.
