Warning: the new savings climate synthetic index

From this month on, a new savings climate synthetic index, taking account of household savings behaviours and anticipations, is published monthly together with household confidence synthetic index. On this occasion, household confidence synthetic index composition is updated. The two balances of opinion on current and expected saving capacities, together with the opportunity to save, are now included in the new savings climate synthetic index and hence removed from the household confidence synthetic index. Those changes are detailed in the focus on savings climate in the June 2026 Economic Outlook (in French).

Future prices evolution: further decrease

In June 2026, the proportion of households who consider that prices will accelerate over the next twelve months has fallen again. The associated balance has lost fifteen points, after dropping by eleven points in May, moving closer to its value in February, before the beginning of the war in the Middle East. However, it still remains above its long-term average.

The proportion of households who consider that prices have risen over the past twelve months has fallen back. The associated balance of opinion has lost two points, but remains well above its long-term average.

Households' perception of prices

Revisions

The May 2026 household confidence synthetic index has not been revised (after rounding). However, the data series has been slightly revised since 1987 (mostly to decimal level), due to changes in the composition of household confidence index (cf. June 2026 Economic Outlook, in French).

For more information

Definition – The synthetic household confidence index summarises household opinion on the economic situation: the higher its value, the more favourable household judgment of the economic situation is. It is calculated using a factor analysis technique, which enables to summarise concomitant movements of highly correlated variables. Here the index describes the common factor of 6 balances of opinion: the past and future general economic situation in France, the past and future personal financial situation, unemployment and major purchases intentions. The synthetic savings climate index indicates, through a single variable, the common component of the three balances related to savings: current saving capacity, expected saving capacity and opportunity to save. It is calculated using the same technique as the synthetic household confidence index is.

Calculation method – For each question, a balance of opinion is calculated as the difference between the percentages of positive and negative answers. As the level of these balances is not open to direct interpretation, comments are based on their changes and their distance to their long-term average. Seasonal coefficients are calculated again every month, hence the slight revision of the seasonal adjusted balance history in each publication.

Around 2,000 households are surveyed by telephone, during the first three weeks of each month. Answers to this survey were collected between 26 May and 17 June 2026 ; most households answer during the first two weeks of collection.

This survey is part of the Joint Harmonised European Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, partly funded by the European Commission.

Next publication: 28 July 2026 at 8:45 am.
