Business births rebounded sharply in May 2026 Enterprise births - May 2026
In May 2026, the total number of business births, across all types of businesses and in seasonally and working-day adjusted data, rebounded sharply (+10.7% after -6.8% in April). Micro-entrepreneur registrations rebounded clearly (+13.6% after -8.3%), as did births of conventional sole proprietorships (+9.0% after -5.3%), and more moderately company births (+3.6% after -3.1%). In raw data, the total number of business births over the last twelve months (June 2025 to May 2026) increased by 10.0% compared with the same period a year earlier (June 2024 to May 2025).

Rebound across all sectors
In May 2026, in seasonally and working-day adjusted data, business births increased in all activity sectors. Notably, i rebounded in business support activities (+13.5% after -6.8%), information and communication (+25.3% after -3.6%) and household services (+13.6% after -10.3%).
Sharp increase in business births over the latest three months compared with the same period a year earlier
In raw data, the cumulative number of business births from March 2026 to May 2026 rose sharply by 10.8% compared with the same period a year earlier. Micro-entrepreneur registrations surged (+15.9%), while company births rose more moderately (+1.5%), as did births of conventional sole proprietorships (+0.8%).
Over this period, the sector contributing the most to the increase was business support activities (+13,100 business births compared with the same period a year earlier, corresponding to a contribution* of +4.7 points). Within this sector, business births increased particularly in “routine cleaning of buildings” (+3,700 business births compared with the same period a year earlier). Among the other sectors contributing to the increase, information and communication came next (+8,200 business births, or +2.9 points), followed by wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+4,300 business births, or +1.5 points). Conversely, transport and storage contributed the most to the decrease in business births compared with the same period a year earlier (-2,100 business births, corresponding to a contribution of -0.7 points).
Increase in business births over the past twelve months
In raw data, the total number of business births over the last twelve months (June 2025 to May 2026) surged by 10.0% year on year. Micro-entrepreneur registrations surged (+12.4%), while company births rose (+6.5%), as did births of conventional sole proprietorships (+3.3%)), but to a lesser extent.

Revisions
For April 2026, the monthly change in the total number of business births (all legal forms combined) was revised downwards by 0.5 points, due to the revision of the raw data and the updating of the seasonal and working-day adjustment coefficients: it now stands at -6.8% versus -6.3% in the previous release.
