Strong downturn in business births in April 2026 Enterprise births - April 2026
In April 2026, the total number of business births, across all types of businesses and in seasonally and working-day adjusted data, fell back sharply (-6.3% after +2.2% in March). It remains at a very high level, above all months prior to July 2025. Micro-entrepreneur registrations fell back strongly (-7.6% after +4.3%), births of conventional sole proprietorships declined again (-4.5% after -2.9%), as did company births (-3.3% after -1.4%). In raw data, the total number of business births over the last twelve months (May 2025 to April 2026) rose by 9.3% compared with the same period a year earlier (May 2024 to April 2025).

Strong decline in business births in support activities, transports and storage activities
In April 2026, in seasonally and working-day adjusted data, business births fell back clearly in business support activities (-6.8% after +3.7%) and household services (-8.9% after +2.6%). They fell sharply in transport and storage (-11.5% after -2.4%). Finally, they slowed in construction (+0.4% after +2.0%), the only major sector increasing.
Sharp increase in business births over the latest three months compared with the same period a year earlier
In raw data, the cumulative number of business births from February 2026 to April 2026 increased strongly by 11.8% compared with the same period a year earlier. Micro-entrepreneur registrations surged (+15.9%), while company births rose more moderately (+4.7%), as did births of conventional sole proprietorships (+3.2%).
Over the last three months, the sector contributing the most to the increase was business support activities (+13,000 business births compared with the same period a year earlier, corresponding to a contribution* of +4.5 points), despite their decline over a month. Within this sector, business births increased particularly in “routine cleaning of buildings” (+3,300 business births compared with the same period a year earlier). Conversely, transport and storage was the only one to have contributed to the decrease in business births compared with the same period a year earlier (-700 business births, corresponding to a contribution of -0.3 points).
Increase in business births over the past twelve months
In raw data, the total number of business births over the last twelve months (May 2025 to April 2026) rose by 9.3% year on year. Micro-entrepreneur registrations surged (+10.9%), while company births rose sharply (+7.3%), when births of conventional sole proprietorships rose more moderately (+3.0%).

Revisions
For March 2026, the monthly change in the total number of business births (all legal forms combined) was revised downwards by 0.4 points, due to the revision of the raw data and the updating of the seasonal and working-day adjustment coefficients: it now stands at +2.2% versus +2.6% in the previous release.
