Moderate increase in business births in February 2026 Enterprise births - February 2026
In February 2026, the total number of business births, for all types of businesses combined and in seasonally and working-day adjusted data, sped up slightly (+0.6% after +0.1% in January). Registrations of micro-entrepreneurs accelerated (+1.4% after +0.8%), business births of conventional sole proprietorships rebounded (+0.8% after -6.5%), while company births fell back (-1.5% after +0.6%). In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the last twelve months (March 2025 to February 2026) increased by 7.3% compared with the same period a year earlier (March 2024 to February 2025).

Rebound in the trade sector, and downturn in construction and industry
In February 2026, in seasonally and working-day adjusted data, business births rebounded in trade, including the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.6% after -1.1%), and in education, human health and social work activities (+2.5% after -4.3%). They accelerated in personal and household services (+3.6% after +1.2%). By contrast, they fell back in construction (-2.2% after +5.3%) and industry (-2.0% after +5.0%)
Sharp year-on-year increase in business births over the past three months
In raw data, the cumulative number of businesses created from December 2025 to February 2026 surged by 12.5% compared with the same period a year earlier. Registrations of micro-entrepreneurs rose sharply (+13.2%), as did company births (+12.4%) and business births of conventional sole proprietorships (+8.6%).
Over this period, the sector contributing most to the increase was business support activities (+15,900 business births compared with the same period a year earlier, i.e. a contribution* of +5.6 points). Within this sector, business births rose particularly sharply in “business and other management consultancy activities” and in “general cleaning of buildings” (respectively, +3,100 and +2,700 business births compared with the same period a year earlier). They were followed by the information and communication sector (+5,600 business births, i.e. +2.0 points) and trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+5,500 business births, i.e. +1.9 points). By contrast, financial and insurance activities made the largest downward contribution to business births compared with the same period a year earlier (-500 business births, i.e. a contribution of -0.2 points).
Increase in business births over the past twelve months
In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the last twelve months (March 2025 to February 2026) increased by 7.3% year on year. Registrations of micro-entrepreneurs rose (+8.4%), as did company births (+7.4%), while business births of conventional sole proprietorships edged down slightly (-0.5%).

The business births series is compiled using data from the Business Demography Information System (SIDE). This system is fed with data from Sirene and supplemented with information from the statistical register Sirus.
The concept of business birth presented by Insee is based on the definition established by Eurostat to ensure harmonization and comparability of european data. According to Eurostat, a business birth corresponds to the emergence of a new legal, market-oriented, and productive entity with no predecessor. This concept of business birth is based on the establishment of new production means.
Business birth statistics distinguish applications for registering self-managed micro-entrepreneur. The term “traditional sole proprietorships” refers to individual businesses excluding micro-entrepreneurs, while “traditional businesses” refers to all businesses excluding micro-entrepreneurs.
Sectoral trends are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall change in business births.
