Moderate decline in business births in October 2025 Enterprise births - October 2025
In October 2025, the total number of business births — all types of businesses combined and seasonally and working-day adjusted — continued to decline (-1.0% after -3.2% in September), after the peak reached in August. Registrations of self-managed micro-entrepreneurs continued to fall (-2.3% after -4.5%), and creations of conventional sole proprietorships fell back (-2.1% after +1.1%), while company births rebounded (+2.7% after -1.5%). In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the last twelve months (from November 2024 to October 2025) rose by 3.5% compared to the same period one year earlier (from November 2023 to October 2024).

Decline in business births over one month, particularly in the trade sector
In October 2025, after seasonal and working-day adjustment, business births continued to decline in trade including the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-4.7% after -5.6%) and in transportation and storage (-3.9% after -7.0%). They fell back in industry (-5.0% after +3.0%). Conversely, business births rebounded in construction (+2.6% after -3.9%) and in information and communication (+4.3% after -5.4%), driven mainly by computer programming activities.
Sharp year-on-year increase in business births over the past three months
In raw data, the cumulative number of businesses created from August to October 2025 surged by 12.3% compared to the same period one year earlier. Company births rose sharply (+13.4%), as did registrations of self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+12.8%) and creations of conventional sole proprietorships (+5.8%).
Over the same period, the sector contributing the most to the increase was business support activities, with 12,700 additional business births compared to the same period a year earlier, representing a contribution* of +4.8 percentage points. Within this sector, business births rose particularly in “head office activities” (+2,600 compared to the same period a year earlier). Conversely, the transportation and storage sector contributed the most to the decline in business births compared to the same period a year earlier (-1,100 births, or a contribution of -0.4 percentage points).
Increase in business births over the past twelve months
In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the past twelve months (from November 2024 to October 2025) increased by 3.5% year on year. Company births rose (+5.2%), as did registrations of self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+4.5%), while creations of conventional sole proprietorships declined sharply (-6.9%).

Revisions
For September 2025, the monthly change in total business births (all types of businesses combined) has been revised downward by 0.5 percentage points, due to revisions in raw data and updates to the seasonal and working-day adjustment (SA-WDA) coefficients. It now stands at -3.2%, compared to -2.7% in the previous release.
