Business births fell back in September 2025 Enterprise births - September 2025

In September 2025, the total number of business births — all types of businesses combined and seasonally and working-day adjusted — fell back (-2.7% after +2.7% in August). Registrations of self-managed micro-entrepreneurs dropped sharply anew (-3.9% after +3.8%), as did company creations to a lesser extent (-1.3% after +1.7%). Conversely, conventional sole proprietorships rebounded (+2.5% after -2.5%). In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the past twelve months (October 2024 to September 2025) increased by 2.7% compared to the same period a year earlier (October 2023 to September 2024).

In September 2025, after seasonal and working-day adjustment, business births declined in almost all sectors. They fell back in trade, including repair motor vehicles and motorcycles (-5.1% after +3.5%) and in household services (-4.3% after +3.6%), and decreased in transportation and storage (-6.4% after +0.1%). In contrast, business births rebounded in education, human health, and social work activities (+1.6% after -3.8%) and continued to rise — although more moderately than in the previous month — in industry (+3.5% after +5.5%). Within industry, they fell back in manufacturing, but accelerated sharply in the rest of the sector, particularly in energy.

In raw data, the cumulative number of business births from July to September 2025 jumped by 11.5% compared to the same period one year earlier, in raw (non-adjusted) data. All types of business births were dynamic over the period: registrations of self-managed micro-entrepreneurs recorded the strongest increase (+13.1%), followed by company creations (+9.3%), and by conventional sole proprietorships (+6.3%).

Over the same period, the sector that contributed the most to this increase was business support activities (+10,200 births compared to the same period one year earlier, representing a contribution of +4.0 percentage points). Within this sector, births rose particularly in head office activities (+2,100 births year-on-year). Conversely, financial and insurance activities was the only sector to contribute negatively to the change in business births compared to the same period one year earlier (-600 births, representing a contribution of -0.3 percentage point).

In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the past twelve months (October 2024 to September 2025) increased by 2.7% year on year. Company creations rose (+4.1%), as did registrations of self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+4.0%), while conventional sole proprietorships declined (-8.8%).

For August 2025, the monthly change in the total number of business births (all types of businesses combined) has been revised upward by 0.1 percentage points, due to the revision of raw data and the update of seasonal and working-day adjustment (SA-WDA) coefficients. It now stands at +2.7%, compared to +2.6% in the previous release.
