The labour market in 2024: salaried employment slowed again, but purchasing power of wages recovered

Employment and Earnings Department (INSEE)

At the end of 2024, 30.4 million people were employed in France, including 27.0 million salaried workers. Over the year, salaried employment stagnated after rising sharply in the wake of the health crisis. Self‑employment, on the other hand, continued to grow strongly.

In total, between the end of 2019 and that of 2024, 1.7 million jobs were created. The working population increased again, with the activity rate for 15‑64 year‑olds reaching in 2024 its highest level since 1975. The unemployment rate remained at 7.4% of the labour force. The proportion of people unemployed or in the halo remained almost stable, at a lower level than the pre‑health crisis one.

In 2024, the slowdown in prices led to a slight rise in the purchasing power of wages, in the private and public sectors alike. However, it did not make up for the losses of the previous two years. The hourly labour cost index continued to rise, but at a slower pace than in 2023.
