Slight decrease in business births in February 2025 Enterprise births - February 2025
In February 2025, the total number of business births, all types combined and seasonally and working-day adjusted, decreased slightly (-0.5%), after remaining stable in the previous month. This decline was due to a drop in registrations of individual businesses under the micro-entrepreneur status (-1.5%), while creations of conventional businesses increased (+1.5%). In raw data, the total number of businesses created over the past twelve months (March 2024 to February 2025) rose by 2.3% compared to the same period a year earlier (March 2023 to February 2024).

Over one month, business births fell back, particularly in the trade sector
In February 2025, seasonally and working-day adjusted, business births fell back in the trade sector, including the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-2.6% after +5.6%), information and communication (-2.3% after +7.7%) and transportation and storage (-2.8% after +6.5%). They continued to decline in education, healthcare, and social work (-3.4% after -2.5%). Conversely, business births increased again in accommodation and food services, albeit at a slower pace than in the previous month (+2.3% after +4.0%), and they recovered in business support activities (+3.7% after -5.2%).
Year-on-year decline in business births over the past three months
In raw data, the total number of business births from December 2024 to February 2025 decreased by 2.1% compared to the same period a year earlier. Conventional sole proprietorships declined very markedly (-15.6%). Company creations fell slightly (-0.5%), as did those of individual businesses under the micro-entrepreneur status (-0.5%).
During this period, the sector contributing the most to the decline was household services (-3,400 business births compared to the same period a year earlier, contributing* -1.2 percentage points). Within this sector, the sharpest drop was in “other personal services not classified elsewhere” which include a variety of activities such as sophrology, tattooing, and pet care (-2,700 business births year on year). Conversely, business births in the transportation and storage sector increased (+4,600 births compared to the same period a year earlier).
Rise in business births over the past twelve months
In raw data, the total number of business births over the past twelve months (March 2024 to February 2025) increased by 2.3% year on year. Registrations of individual businesses under the micro-entrepreneur status rose (+4.0%), as did company creations (+3.3%). Conversely, conventional sole proprietorships declined sharply (-9.6%).

The business births series is compiled using data from the Business Demography Information System (SIDE). This system is fed with data from Sirene and supplemented with information from the statistical register Sirus.
The concept of business birth presented by Insee is based on the definition established by Eurostat to ensure harmonization and comparability of european data. According to Eurostat, a business birth corresponds to the emergence of a new legal, market-oriented, and productive entity with no predecessor. This concept of business birth is based on the establishment of new production means.
Business birth statistics distinguish applications for registering individual businesses under the micro-entrepreneur status. The term “conventional sole proprietorships” refers to individual businesses excluding micro-entrepreneurs, while “conventional businesses” refers to all businesses excluding micro-entrepreneurs.
Sectoral trends are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall change in business births.
