Further decline in business births in July 2024 Enterprise births - July 2024
In July 2024, the number of business births for all types of enterprises declined for the second consecutive month (‑1.6% month-on-month after ‑0.7% in June), seasonally and working-day adjusted. Conventional business births fell back (‑3.1% after +2.7%), and micro-entrepreneurs' registrations continued to decline, but at a slower pace (‑0.7% after ‑2.5%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months (August 2023 to July 2024) increased by 7.5% compared with the same months one year earlier (August 2022 to July 2023).
The variations in business births compared to 2023 should be interpreted with great caution. Since 1st January 2023, formalities for registering a business must be carried out on the electronic “one-stop shop” for business formalities. This major change weakened the monthly monitoring of business births in 2023. However, its effect on the measurement of the amount of business births in 2023 is limited overall. Decline in business births in most sectors over a month
In July 2024, seasonally and working-day adjusted, business births decreased again sharply in information and communication (‑8.3% after ‑10.5%) and more moderately in business support activities (‑2.1% after ‑1.3%). They fell back in “other services activities” (‑3.0% after +1.8%). Conversely, business births rebounded in transportation and storage (+3.8% after ‑10.4%) and in real estate activities (+2.8% after ‑1.9%).
Sharp rise in business births over the past three months
The raw number of business set up from May 2024 to July 2024 rose sharply in comparison with the same months one year earlier (+11.2%), which had seen a clear fall in business births. This significant increase was driven by a surge in micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations (+13.7%) and, to a lesser extent, companies births (+11.0%). Conversely, conventional sole proprietorships births fell (‑1.4%).
Over this period, transportation and storage activities made the largest positive contribution to the overall increase (+5,800 business births compared to the same months one year earlier, representing a contribution* of +2.4 points). Within this sector, the rise was due in particular to the growth in “other postal and courier activities” (+3,400 business births over the last three months), which includes in particular home delivery.

Sharp increase in business births over the last twelve months
The raw number of business births totted up over the last twelve months (August 2023 to July 2024) rose sharply (+7.5% year on year). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations grew strongly (+10.1%), while company births (+3.5%) and conventional sole proprietorships’ births (+2,5%) increased more moderately.

For the month of June 2024, the monthly variation in the total business births (all types of business combined) is not revised.

The business births data are build from the Business Demography Information System (SIDE) which replaces the Register of Enterprises and Establishments (REE). This information system is itself supplied with data from SIRENE and enriched with elements from the SIRUS statistical register.
The definition of creation adopted by INSEE is based on the concept defined by Eurostat, to harmonize and compare European data. The appearance of a market producer legal unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources.
Starting from the data relating to January 2009, the business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
Since the January 2022 publication, business births have been calculated according to a revised scheme. This has led to an increase in the level of historic series of business births.
