Between the end of March 2022 and the end of June 2022, payroll employment increased by 0.4% (+95,300 jobs), nearly the same as in the Q1 (+0.3% that is +91,700 jobs). It increased steadily in 2021 with a growth of 3.4% between the end of 2020 and the end of 2021 (+861,000 jobs). In total, mid-2022, payroll employment exceeded sharply its mid-2021 level (+2.2% that is +561,100 jobs ) and its pre-sanitary crisis level, at the end of 2019 (+3.2%, that is +832,000 jobs).
The increase in Q2 2022 was due to the advance of the private payroll employment which rose by 0.5% (that is +93,000 jobs), after +0.4% at Q1 2022 (that is +88,200 jobs). It has grown above its level at the end of 2019 by 3.8%. Public payroll employment was stable, after +0.1% in Q1 2022. It exceeded its pre-sanitary crisis level by 1.1%.

Temporary employment decreased for the second consecutive quarter
In Q2 2022, temporary employment decreased: -2.5% (-20,500 jobs) after -1.9% in the previous quarter (-15,800 jobs). It dropped in the first quarter of 2020 and kept rising sharply until the end of 2021. As a result, mid-2022, temporary employment remained slightly higher than its end 2019 level (+1.6%).
As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (industry, construction, market or non market services).
Excluding temporary work, private payroll continued to increase in market services
Excluding temporary work, private payroll increased significantly in market services: +0.8% (+93,200 jobs), after +0.7% in Q1 2022 (+86,600 jobs). It topped its Q2 2021 level by 3.8% (that is +446,800 jobs). This growth explained most of the total increase in payroll employment, over a quarter as over a year.
Accommodation and food service activities has the most substantial contribution to the growth of private payroll in Q2 2022 (+29,800 jobs); it is followed professional, scientific and technical activities excluding temporary work (+24,200 jobs), then information and communication (+15,100 jobs) and wholesale and retail trade (+9,900 jobs).
Moreover, industrial employment (excluding temporary work) increased in the second quarter of 2022 by 0.3% and by 1.1% over a year. It reached its pre-sanitary crisis level. In the construction sector, payroll employment remained stable in Q2 2022, and exceeded its Q2 2021 level by 1.5%.
Finally, in the second quarter of 2022, payroll employment in non-market services increased slightly: +0.1% (or +12,300 jobs), which leaded to a growth of +0.5% over a year.

Revisions
Compared to the employment estimate published on 9 June 2022, the increase in payroll employment (private and public) in the first quarter of 2022 is raised by 13,000 jobs, but the percentage evolution remains unchanged (+0.3%). The revision comes mainly from the private sector (+18,700 jobs), mainly in the service and industrial sector, both due to the revision of the coefficients of seasonal variations.
Compared to the flash estimate published on 5 August 2022, the increase in payroll employment in the private sector alone in the second quarter of 2022 is slightly decreased (-9,500 jobs) with an evolution unchanged (+0.5%). This revision is explained by downward revisions in the market service sector (-7,900 jobs) and the non market service sector (-8,700 jobs), while payroll employment in industrial sector is raised (+6,800 jobs).
