Further decrease in business start-ups in July 2016 Enterprise births - July 2016

In July 2016, the number of business births decreased again (-1.2% following -1.6%), for all entreprises, seasonally and working-day adjusted. Like in June, the rise in sole proprietorship start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+0.6%) did not offset the fall in micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (-3.9%).

+9.0% year-on-year (quarterly basis)

The raw amount of births added up in the last three months kept going up compared to the same period one year before (+9.0%). This growth is common to every type of business set-ups, especially sole proprietorship start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+12.8%) and companies (+11.6%). As for micro-entrepreneurs' registrations, they rose by 4.3%. Excluding financial and insurance activities, all economic activities were on the rise, particularly transportation and business support activities.1

+2.5% year-on-year (twelve months basis)

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last twelve months rose at a faster pace (+2.5% year-on-year following +2.0% in June). This surge was due to sole proprietorship births excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+19.2%) and companies' start-ups (+9.8%). On the opposite, self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' set-ups declined strongly (−10.3%).

Two business set-ups out of five are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In Junly 2016, micro–entrepreneurs' registrations amounted to 40.9% of the businesses set up over the twelve last months. One year before, the share was 46.7%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in June 2016 has been lowered by 0.3 points due to the update of the SA parameters and the revision of raw data.

1 The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the observed variation of this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.
