The usual reference period to be used for presenting national accounts data is the calendar year for annual data and the quarter for quarterly data. Two basic kinds of information are recorded : flows and stocks. Flows refer to actions and effects of events that take place within a given period of time (year or quarter), while stocks refer to positions at a point of time (usually the beginning or end of a year or quarter).
