In metropolitan France, the sampling frame for the Employment survey is the demographic file of dwellings and individuals (Fideli).

In the DOM, the sampling frame is the population census.

Continuous

The survey is conducted continuously, every week of the year.

Data collection is carried out under computer-assisted collection (CAPI), face-to-face for the first interview of the household, and by telephone or internet for the re-interviews. If a personn cannot (or does not want to) answer, another person can do it for them (proxy).

An annual specific survey is conducted in Mayotte.

The data collection is conducted continuously, every week of the year.

The interview is conducted in the 3 weeks following the reference week.

Each dwelling is surveyed six consecutive quarters.

• The sample of the LFS is a sample of dwellings, not of individuals. It has two main characteristics: it is areal (made up of a draw of groups of nearby dwellings) and rotational (the dwellings entering the sample in a given quarter are surveyed for six consecutive quarters).
• In metropolitan France, the sample draw is stratified by region. Within each region, the sectors are drawn in a "balanced" way, in proportion to the number of main residences, according to the characteristics of the sampling frame. The average sampling rate is 1/400.
• In the DOM, the sample is stratified (according to geographical areas) to one degree, with systematic drawing of dwellings with equal probabilities within each stratum. The average sampling rate is 1/100.
• The LFS sample is evenly distributed over all weeks of each quarter; each cluster is assigned to a "reference" week.
• The add-on module is applied to incoming clusters.

In 2022, each quarter, 80 000 dwellings are surveyed.

• For metropolitan France, a two-steps weighting method is applied to correct for non-reponse and control for sampling fluctuations: calibration and non-response model on variables from the sampling frame in the first step, calibration on external data (population by age, sex and region; number of dwellings) in the second step.
• For DOM, a two-steps weighting method is also applied: non-response model on variables from the sampling frame in the first step, calibration on external data (population by age, sex and region; number of dwellings) in the second step.

Long series are released seasonally adjusted.
