Revisions

The July 2026 household confidence synthetic index has not been revised (after rounding). The July 2026 savings climate synthetic index, however, has been revised upwards by one point (after rounding).

For more information

Definition – The synthetic household confidence index summarises household opinion on the economic situation: the higher its value, the more favourable household judgment of the economic situation is. It is calculated using a factor analysis technique, which enables to summarise concomitant movements of highly correlated variables. Here the index describes the common factor of 6 balances of opinion: the past and future general economic situation in France, the past and future personal financial situation, unemployment and major purchases intentions. The synthetic savings climate index indicates, through a single variable, the common component of the three balances related to savings: current saving capacity, expected saving capacity and opportunity to save. It is calculated using the same technique as the synthetic household confidence index is.

Calculation method – For each question, a balance of opinion is calculated as the difference between the percentages of positive and negative answers. As the level of these balances is not open to direct interpretation, comments are based on their changes and their distance to their long-term average. Seasonal coefficients are calculated again every month, hence the slight revision of the seasonal adjusted balance history in each publication.

Around 2,000 households are surveyed by telephone, during the first three weeks of each month. Answers to this survey were collected between 28 July and 18 August 2026 ; most households answer during the first two weeks of collection.

This survey is part of the Joint Harmonised European Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, partly funded by the European Commission.

Next publication: 24 September 2026 at 8:45 am.
