Except in “other manufacturing” where it is stable, the business climate has brightened in all of the sub-sectors of the industry
In July 2026, the business climate indicator in the manufacturing of food products and beverages has rebounded. At 99, it has moved closer to its long-term average (100). This rebound mainly comes from the rebound in the balance of opinion on global order books.
In the manufacturing of machinery and equipment goods, the synthetic indicator of the business climate has increased anew. At 106, it has moved away from its long-term average (100) and has reached its highest level since July 2023. This increase mainly comes from the rebound in the balances of opinion relating to order books, particularly foreign ones. The synthetic indicator has improved in each of its three sub-sectors but more strongly in the manufacturing of machinery and equipment where it has moved back to its average that it hadn't reached since September 2023. The climate has also reached its highest level since July 2023 in the manufacturing of computer, electronic and optical products, far above its average.
In the manufacturing of transport equipment, the business climate indicator has rebounded. At 103, it has deviated from its long-term average (100). It has increased both in the sub-sector of “motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers”, where it has moved closer to its average, and in “other transport equipment”, where it has moved away from its own.
Finally, the business climate indicator in “other manufacturing” is stable. At 99, it stands just below its long-term average (100). At the sub-sector level, the indicator has significantly increased in "textiles, clothing industries, leather and footwear industry" and in "wood, paper, printing", where it has reached levels unobserved respectively since August 2023 et July 2022, significantly above its average. On the contrary, it has decreased, slightly, in "chemicals and chemical products", "rubber, plastic and other mineral products" and in "basic metals and fabricated metals products": in those three sectors, it stands below its average.

Revisions
The business climate in manufacturing industry of June 2026 has not been revised (after rounding).
For further information
For questions with three possible answers, a balance of opinion is the difference between the weighted percentage of “above normal” or “increase” answers and the weighted percentage of “below normal” or “decrease” answers.
The composite indicators of business climate presented here are estimated independently of one another. Thus, that of the whole of manufacturing industry cannot be deduced from the sub-sectoral climates. The same balances of opinion are included into their calculations, but they are not assigned the same weightings. Also, the indicators are scaled to have a long-run average of 100 and a standard deviation of 10.
This survey is part of the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, partly funded by the European Commission.
The responses to this survey were collected between 25 June and 20 July 2026: most companies answer during the first two weeks of collection.
Additional information (methodology, links, etc.) is available on the “Documentation” tab.
