In the first quarter of 2026, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations except campsites, measured in overnight stays, increased by 1.0% compared to its Q1 2025 level. Attendance increased in hotels (+2.5%) but decreased in holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA, -1.7%). Over a year, non-resident customers attendance increased (+4.4%), while residents’ one decreased slightly (-0.4%). Among the purposes of stay, business tourism continued to decline.

In the first quarter of 2026, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations except campsites, measured in overnight stays, increased by 1.0% compared to its Q1 2025 level. Growth in hotels driven by the high-range hotels

In the first quarter of 2026, hotel occupancy reached 43.1 million overnight stays, that was 1 million additional overnight stays compared to Q1 2025. Over a year, resident attendance of customers increased by 2.3% (that was 600,000 additional overnight stays) and non-resident customers’ one by 2.9% (that was 400,000 additional overnight stays).

Quartely hotel overnight stays in thousands

Occupancy in unclassified hotels decreased strongly (‑14.1%) due to the desaffection of both resident and non-resident customers. In 1- to 2- star hotels category, attendance decreased more moderately (‑1.4%), solely due to resident customers. Conversely, hotel stays increased markedly in 3-star hotels (+4.9%) and in 4- to 5- star hotels (+5.9%), supported by both resident and non-resident customers.

Attendance in hotels increased at a slower pace on coastlines (+1.5%) and in mountain areas (+1.8%) than in other areas (+2.9%). It increased in rural areas (+2.8%) and even more strongly in intermediate urban areas (+10.6%), while it decreased in high urban density areas (-1.2%).

Non-resident customers more numerous in hotels

Non-resident customers in hotels increased in Q1 2026 compared to the Q1 2025 level (+2.9%). Those from Germany and the United Kingdom increased the most (respectively by +8.7% and +8.2%). On the contrary, the number of Belgian visitors decreased slightly (-0.3%), and Dutch visitor numbers fell more significantly (-2.3%).

Outside Europe, attendance from United States decreased (‑0.6%) as did that from Asia-Oceania (‑1.3%).

Business attendance declined

Business attendance in hotels and other short-stay accomodations declined in Q1 2026 (‑2.9% compared to Q1 2025, that was 600,000 fewer overnight stays), confirming the downward trend observed since the health crisis. This decline mainly affected high urban density areas.

Attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations decreased only due to resident customers

In Q1 2026, attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA) of metropolitan France reached 22.4 million overnight stays. It decreased by 1.7% compared to its Q1 2025 level, that was 400,000 fewer overnight stays. Attendance decreased both in tourism residences (‑1.0%) and in other short-stay accommodations (‑4.4%). This decrease was only due to resident customers (‑4.8%). Conversely, non-resident customers attendance increased strongly (+8.5%).

Attendance decreased in mountain areas (‑2.9%) and on coastline (‑3.3%), but it increased slightly out of coastline and mountain areas (+0.4%). Overnight stays decreased in rural areas (‑1.0%) and even more strongly in high urban density areas (‑8.8%), while they rose in intermediate urban areas (+9.7%).

Attendance evolution over a year in collective accommodations in Q4 2025 has been confirmed by final data at +2.2%.

Holiday and other short-stay accomodations (HOSSA) cover activity code 55.20Z (« Touristic accomodations and other short-stay accomodations »): this category includes, among others, tourist and hotel residences, holiday villages, family holiday centres, international residential centres, sports centres, youth hostels, etc. Data on campsites are published only with the third quarter results, which corresponds to the peak season for this type of accommodations; campsite occupancy during the other quarters remains very limited.
