In the third quarter of 2025, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations, measured in overnight stays, increased by 2.9% compared to its Q3 2024 level. Attendance increased in all types of tourist accommodations: hotels (+4.3%), campsites (+2.2%) and holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA, +2.4%).

In the third quarter of 2025, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations, measured in overnight stays, increased by 2.9% compared to its Q3 2024 level. Attendance increased in all types of tourist accommodations: hotels (+4.3%), campsites (+2.2%) and holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA, +2.4%).

Hotel attendance boosted by non-resident customers

In the third quarter of 2025, hotel occupancy reached 69.2 million overnight stays, that is 2.8 million additional overnight stays compared to Q3 2024. Over a year, the increase was strong for non-resident customers (+11.4%, that is nearly 3 million additional overnight stays), while attendance slightly decreased for resident customers (-0.2%, that is 80,000 fewer overnight stays).

The occupancy increase clearly benefited the high-range hotels (+9.9% for the 4- to 5- star hotels) and, to a lesser extent, 3- star hotels (+4.9%), and only marginally 1- to 2- star hotels (+0.9%). Conversely, attendance at unclassified hotels was down sharply (-9.6%).

Attendance in hotels increased in all touristic areas (+2.0% on coastlines, +2.0% in mountain areas and +5.6% outside these areas). It rose much more sharply in dense urban areas (+7.3%) than in intermediate urban areas (+1.5%) and in rural municipalities (+0.8%).

As in previous years, the share of business customers reached its lowest level in the third quarter, accounting for nearly 23% of overnight stays over the period, compared with 37% in the first quarter and 30% in the second. Business tourism continued to decline since the end of the health crisis in 2022: business overnight stays were down 14.5% compared with the third quarter of 2024, representing 2.7 million fewer overnight stays. This decline affected urban municipalities more than rural ones.

Non-resident customers attendance increased significantly in hotels, regardless of their origin

Non-resident customers’ overnight stays in hotels increased sharply in Q3 2025 compared to the Q3 2024 level (+11.4%), regardless of the customers’ origin. Among European customers, German tourists recorded the highest increase in attendance (+10.2%, that is nearly 270,000 additional overnight stays).

Outside Europe, attendance of customers from United States increased sharply (+14.7%, that is 500,000 additional overnight stays), as that from Asia-Oceania (+30.2%, that is 270,000 additional overnight stays).

Attendance in campsites increased over a year, both for resident and non-resident customers

In Q3 2025, attendance in French campsites reached 107.0 million overnight stays. It increased by 2.2% compared to its Q3 2024 level, that is nearly 2.3 million additional overnight stays. This increase affected resident customers (+2.2%, or 1.6 million additional overnight stays) as well as non-resident customers (+2.1%, or 700,000 additional overnight stays).

Attendance increased in 4- to 5- star campsites (+3.3%), while it was stable in 3- star campsites and it decreased in 1- to 2- star ones (-2.8%).

With nearly 60 million overnight stays, coastlines concentrated the majority of camping overnight stays (56% of the total). Attendance there was up by 2.7% year on year, compared with more moderate increases in mountain regions (+1.4%) and in other areas outside both coastal and mountain zones (+1.6%).

Tourism residence attendance was also trending upward

In Q3 2025, attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA) in metropolitan France reached 34.7 million overnight stays. It increased by 2.4% compared to its Q3 2024 level, that is 800,000 additional overnight stays. This rise was mainly due to higher attendance from non-resident customers (+12.1%). Attendance increased only in tourism residences (+3.5%), which account for 70% of all HOSSA overnight stays. It remained stable in other types of accommodation, such as holiday villages and youth hostels.

Attendance increased slightly along coastline (+0.8%) and more markedly outside coastal and mountain areas (+6.2%). Conversely, it decreased slightly in the mountain areas (-0.6%). Overnight stays rose in dense urban areas (+5.2%) and in rural areas (+2.4%), but showed a slight decline in intermediate urban areas (-0.6%).

Revision

Compared to provisory data published on 20 August 2025, attendance evolution over a year in collective accommodations in Q2 2025 has been revised downwards by 0.1 points (+5.3% instead of +5.4%). This revision is due to late answers received from surveyed companies.
