In the first quarter of 2025, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations except campsites, measured in overnight stays, decreased by 1.5% compared to its Q1 2024 level; this fall back over a year was due to a weaker month of March. The decrease was more significant in hotels (‑2.0%) than in holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA, ‑0.5%).

In the first quarter of 2025, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations except campsites, measured in overnight stays, decreased by 1.5% compared to its Q1 2024 level; this fall back over a year was due to a weaker month of March. The decrease was more significant in hotels (‑2.0%) than in holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA, ‑0.5%).

Attendance increased only in high-range hotels

In the first quarter of 2025, hotel occupancy was 42.2 million overnight stays. It decreased by 2.0% compared to its Q1 2024 level. Resident customers’ attendance decreased by 3.8% (that is a little bit more than one million fewer overnight stays), while that of non-residents increased by 1.6% over a year (that is a little bit more than 222,000 more overnight stays).

Only the occupancy in high-range hotels rose (+4.6%) thanks to the increase in both resident and non-resident customers. Attendance decreased in all other categories, the lower the category, the sharper the drop (-18.4% in unclassified hotels, ‑5.6% in 1- to 2- star hotels and ‑1.5% in 3- star hotels).

Attendance in hotels decreased in all touristic areas (‑2.7% in mountain areas, ‑1.3% on coastlines and ‑2.0% in other areas). Attendance in hotels also declined regardless of the area density, but the decrease was lower in urban areas (‑0.6% in urban areas, ‑4.2% in intermediate urban areas and ‑3.5% in rural areas).

Business attendance decreased quiet significantly in Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2024 (‑6.5%, that is one million fewer overnight stays in hotels). This decline impacted all density areas, but was less pronounced in urban density area.

European customers attendance decreased significantly in hotels, contrary to the non-European one

Non-resident customers’ overnight stays in hotels increased in Q1 2025 compared to the Q1 2024 level (+1.6%). But this rise was only due to non-European occupancy. British attendance decreased by 17.9%, Belgium one decreased by 3.6% and German one decreased by 2.6%.

Outside Europe, United States customers’ attendance increased once again sharply (+39.2%) and Asia-Oceania one stayed dynamic (+14.5%).

Attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations was slightly under its Q1 2024 level

In Q1 2025, attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA) of metropolitan France was 23.0 million overnight stays. It decreased by 0.5%, compared to its Q1 2024 level. This decline is due to the fall in non-resident customers (‑1.7%). It increased slightly in tourism residences (+0.2%), but it decreased in other short-stay accommodations (‑2.6%).

Attendance decreased by 2.7% in mountain areas and by 8.4% on coastlines. On the contrary, it increased by 5.7% in other areas. It increased quiet significantly in densely urban areas (+6.0%) but decreased in intermediate urban areas (‑3.0%) and in rural areas (‑2.9%).

Revision

Final data confirm the year-on-year increase by 3.2% in attendance at collective tourist accommodations in the fourth quarter of 2024, as published on 20 February based on provisional data.
