Adults with relational disabilities report mistreatments and discriminations more frequently
Suzanne Scott (Drees)
Disabled adults living in ordinary housing, whether they are restricted in everyday activities or have severe functional limitations, report that they suffered some forms of mistreatment more frequently than adults without disabilities. They also report more often that they were discriminated against because of their health, disability, or aging.
Adults with relational limitations are particularly affected: half of them report that they were mistreated in some way in the past twelve months, and one in five that they received unequal treatment due to their health, disability or aging at least once in their lifetime.
When accounting for other characteristics, functional limitations play a greater part than sociodemographic characteristics on the odds of reporting some form of mistreatment in the last twelve months or at least one occurrence of discrimination because of one’s health, disability, or aging during one’s lifetime. These odds vary depending on the type of functional limitation. They are three times higher for people with relational limitations.
