In Q3 2024, private payroll employment was virtually stable Flash estimate of payroll employment - third quarter 2024
Between the end of June 2024 and the end of September 2024, private payroll employment was virtually stable (-0.1% that is -25,000 jobs), after -0.1% in the previous quarter (that is -28,500 jobs). Private payroll was 0.3% below its previous peak in March 2024 (that is -53,500 jobs), but at the same level as a year earlier (that is -4,900 jobs). Private payroll employment far exceeded its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.6% (that is +1.1 million jobs).

In Q3 2024, private payroll employment was virtually stable, and remained below its level of Q1 2024
Between the end of June 2024 and the end of September 2024, private payroll employment was virtually stable (-0.1% that is -25,000 jobs), after -0.1% in the previous quarter (that is -28,500 jobs). Private payroll was 0.3% below its previous peak in March 2024 (that is -53,500 jobs), but at the same level as a year earlier (that is -4,900 jobs). Private payroll employment far exceeded its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.6% (that is +1.1 million jobs).
Temporary employment decreased less sharply than in the previous quarter
In Q3 2024, temporary employment decreased afresh, but less sharply than in the previous quarter: -0.5% after -2.2% (that is -3,900 jobs after -16,200 jobs). Temporary employment was below its Q3 2023 level by 4.7% (that is -36,400 jobs) and 5.5% below its pre-sanitary crisis level (that is -42,900 jobs).
As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).
Excluding temporary work, private payroll was stable in industry and kept decreasing in construction
Between the end of June 2024 and the end of September 2024, private payroll employment excluding temporary work in agriculture rised by 0.8% (that is 2,500 jobs) after -2.2% in the previous quarter. It was below its previous year level by 1.3%.
Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was stable, after virtual stability in the previous quarter: +0.1% in as in the previous quarter (that is +4,200 jobs). It topped its Q3 2023 level by 0.6% (or +20,300 jobs). After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q3 2021, it exceeded it by +2.5% (+79,700 net job creations since the end of 2019).
In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) decreased for seventh consecutive quarter: -0.6% (that is -9,300 jobs after -10,000 jobs). It was below its Q3 2023 level (-2.0%; that is -31,200 jobs) but remained well above its pre-sanitary level (+4.7%, that is +70,100 jobs compared to the end of 2019).
Employment slowed was virtually stable in market services
In Q3 2024, in market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was virtually stable: -0.1% after 0.0% (that is +11,200 jobs after -3,100 jobs). It topped its Q3 2023 level (+0.2% or +26,700 jobs) and exceeded sharply its pre-sanitary level (+7.5% compared to the end of 2019 or +867,100 jobs).
In non-market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was virtually stable : -0.1% after +0.1% (that is -3,100 jobs after +3,500 jobs). It was above its Q3 2023 level by 0.7% (or +19,800 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 5.3% (or +138,700 jobs).
