In the second quarter of 2024, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations except campsites, measured in overnight stays, decreased by 4.0% compared to its Q2 2023 level. This decline affected all types of accommodations, with a more significant drop in hotels (‑4.5%) compared to holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA, ‑2.5%). It is particularly noticeable in April and June, while attendance in May was similar to that of 2023.

In the second quarter of 2024, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations except campsites, measured in overnight stays, decreased by 4.0% compared to its Q2 2023 level. This decline affected all types of accommodations, with a more significant drop in hotels (‑4.5%) compared to holiday and other short-stay accommodations (HOSSA, ‑2.5%). It is particularly noticeable in April and June, while attendance in May was similar to that of 2023.

Attendance decreased in all hotel categories, except in premium hotels

In the second quarter of 2024, hotel occupancy was 57 million overnight stays. It decreased by 4.5% compared to its Q2 2023 level. Resident customers’ attendance was the main contributor to this decline (‑5.5% that is 2.1 million fewer overnight stays), while non-residents’ one decreased more moderately (‑2.7% that is 600,000 fewer overnight stays) over a year.

Only attendance in 4- to 5- star hotels increased slightly (+0.6%), thanks to an increase of non-resident numbers and a smaller decline of resident’ ones. In all other hotel categories, attendance decreased significantly due to the disaffection of both resident and non-resident customers. Unclassified and 1- to 2- star hotels were experiencing the largest declines (‑11.3% and ‑8.7%).

Attendance decreased in all France areas. This decline was particularly marked in Île-de-France (‑8.5 %) and in ski mountain area (‑6.8%). In total, those two areas registered 1.7 million fewer overnight stays. Only non-resident attendance increased on coastlines (+7.6%) and in provincial urban area (+1.4%).

Business attendance decreased sharply in Q2 2024 compared to Q2 2023 (‑16.4%, that is 4.0 million fewer overnight stays). This decline impacted all areas.

European customers attendance was significantly declining in hotels, unlike non-European’ one

Non-resident customers’ overnight stays in hotels decreased in Q2 2024 compared to its Q2 2023 level (‑2.7%). This decline affected European customers with a sharp decrease for British attendance (‑17.4%) and German’ one (‑10.5%)

On the other hand, United States attendance increased by 15.5% and Chinese’ one by 40%, this latter rising from 290,000 to 405,000 overnight stays. However, It remained half of its pre-sanitary crisis level.

Attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations also declined in Q2 2024

In holiday and other short-stay accommodations of metropolitan France, attendance decreased by 2.5%, compared to its Q2 2023 level. It decreased in tourism residences (‑4.0%) but increased in other short-stay accommodations (+1.6%). This decrease is due to the disaffection of resident customers (‑3.9%), the number of non-resident customers, on the other hand, increased by 3.7%.

Attendance increased only in the ski mountain area (+3.7%). It decreased by 1.6% in Île-de-France, 2.0% in provincial urban area, 2.5% on the coastlines and 7.4% in other France metropolitan areas.

Compared to provisory data published on 23 May, attendance evolution over a year in collective accommodations except campsites in Q1 2024 has been slightly revised (+2.4% instead of +2.1%).
