Buildings’ maintenance and improvement work prices are disseminated with reference 100 in 2021 from this release.
Moderate rise over a quarter
In Q1 2024, buildings’ maintenance and improvement work prices –IPEA– went up moderately over a quarter (+0.4% after +0.4% in Q4 2023 and +0.3% in Q3 2023), with a slightly more pronounced rise in the non-residential sector (+0.6% after +0.7%) than in the residential sector (+0.5% after +0.2%).
Prices sped up for plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (+1.3% after +0.2%), and roofing (+0.6% after +0.5%). They bounced back for joinery installation (+0.5% after -0.4%).
Prices slowed down very slightly for floor and wall covering (+0.5% after +0.6%), “other specialised construction activities” (+0.4% after +0.6%), and more sharply for painting and glazing (+0.4% after +0.9%) and electrical installation (+0.3% after +1.1%).
Finally, prices were steady for plastering (0.0% after +0.2%) and fell back for “other construction installation” (-1.6% after +1.3%).
Slowdown over a year
Year on year, buildings' maintenance and improvement work prices slowed down for the sixth consecutive quarter (+1.4% in Q1 2024 after +3.3% in the previous quarter). The price rise over a year was more pronounced in the non-residential sector (+2.1%) than in the residential sector (+1.0%).
Over a year, prices slowed down for all of the work categories.
The rise of prices was still marked in floor and wall covering (+2.5% after +3.3%) and plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (+2.4% after +4.1%).
It was more moderate for painting and glazing (+1.9% after +4.2%), roofing (+1.9% after +3.8%), as well as for plastering (+1.8% after +4.1%) and for electrical installation (+1.4% after +4.1%).
The categories for which the prices rose the most slightly over a year are joinery installation (+0.3% after +1.7%), “other construction installation” (+0.8% after +6.3%) and “other specialised construction activities” (+1.0% after +1.5%).
Revisions
The quarterly change in the IPEA for the fourth quarter of 2023 is confirmed (after rounding), compared to the previous release: it still stands at +0.4%.

The buildings’ maintenance and improvement work price index (IPEA) is a quarterly index which measures the evolution of prices (net of taxes) charged by construction enterprises (including artisanal forms) for their maintenance and improvement works in residential and non-residential buildings during the quarter under review.
The IPEA indices are not seasonally nor working-day adjusted.
