In accordance with the European Business Statistics Regulation, the index of sales volume in overall trade and the associated turnover indices will be disseminated in reference and base 100 in 2021 from 29 March 2024, the date of publication of the January 2024 results.

All data are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

In December 2023, the volume of sales in trade grew by 0.7% over a month, following a drop of 0.6% in November.

In December 2023, the rebound in the volume of sales was mainly led by wholesale trade

In December 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles bounced back over a month (+1.6% after ‑1.5% in November). This growth, which concerned all wholesale sub-sectors, was mainly due to the household goods (+2.0% after +0.4%), “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: +1.9% after ‑4.8%) and agricultural raw materials and live animals (+5.3% after ‑0.8%).

In December 2023, the volume of sales also bounced back in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.6% after ‑0.7%), especially in the sale of motor vehicles (+2.6% after ‑0.6%).

Lastly, the volume of sales decreased in December 2023 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.2% after +0.9%), both in specialised stores (‑0.9% after +0.9%), in non specialised stores (‑1.2% after +0.5%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑2.5% after +1.9%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales dropped sharply for the “other household equipment” (furniture, hardware, appliances, etc.: ‑5.4% after +2.4%), while it sped up slightly for the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: +0.6% after +0.4%).

Early retail trade estimate for January 2024

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have bounced back in January 2024 (+1.2% over a month). From November 2023 to January 2024, it would be 0.5% lower than that of the same three months a year earlier.
