In October 2023, the volume of sales in trade dropped again over a month (‑0.2%), but more moderately than in September (‑0.6%).

In October 2023, the volume of sales decreased in both wholesale trade and retail trade

In October 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased again over a month (‑0.3% after ‑1.4% in September), particularly in the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (‑1.1% after ‑1.9%) and in the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑0.7% after ‑2.3%).

The volume of sales also decreased in October 2023 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.4% after +0.3%), due to the downturn in non specialised stores (‑1.3% after +1.9%). It was virtually stable in specialised stores (+0.1% after ‑0.6%) and recovered in retail trade not in stores (+0.5% after ‑0.3%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales bounced back for the “other household equipment” (furniture, hardware, appliances, etc.: +1.5% after ‑3.1%), while it dropped for the cultural and recreation goods (‑1.2% after +2.5%).

Lastly, in October 2023, the volume of sales accelerated in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.5% after +0.2%), mostly led by the sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (+3.0% after ‑1.2%).

Early retail trade estimate for November 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have recovered in November 2023 (+0.4% over a month). However, from September to November 2023, it would be 2.2% lower than that of the same three months a year earlier.

From August to October 2023, the volume of sales decreased by 1.1% compared to the same three months a year before

The volume of sales of the three months under review (August to October 2023) in overall trade was 1.1% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. While it grew strongly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+7.6%), it decreased both in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑2.4%) and in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑2.6%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales decreased both in specialised stores (‑2.7%), in non-specialised stores (‑2.6%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑1.9%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in September 2023 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points (after rounding), to ‑0.6%.
