In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

In September 2023, the volume of sales in trade decreased by 0.7% over a month after a 0.2% growth in August.

In September 2023, the drop in the volume of sales was concentrated in wholesale trade

In September 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back over a month (‑1.4% after +0.7% in August). This downturn, which concerned all wholesale sub-sectors except wholesale on a fee or contract basis, was mainly due to the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑2.2% after +1.6%), the household goods (‑1.6% after ‑0.2%) and the information and communication equipment (‑3.4% after +1.7%).

The volume of sales bounced back slightly in September 2023 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.2% after ‑1.1 %). While it grew in non specialised stores (+1.9% after a stability), it kept decreasing in specialised stores (‑0.7% after ‑1.6%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑0.4% after ‑1.6%). Within specialised stores, the decrease came from the "other household equipment" (furniture, hardware, appliances, etc.: ‑3.1% after +0.1%), the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: ‑0.9% after ‑1.6%), and automotive fuel (‑1.5% after ‑3.5%).

Lastly, in September 2023, the volume of sales decelerated in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.3% after +1.2%).

Early retail trade estimate for October 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in October 2023 (‑1.0% over a month). From August to October 2023, it would be 2.7% lower than that of the same three months a year earlier.
