Between the end of June 2023 and the end of September 2023, private payroll employment was virtually stable: -0.1% (or 17,700 net job destructions) after +0.1% in the previous quarter (that is +12,200 net job creations). It was the second quarter of near-stability after many quarters of rise in 2021 and 2022. Private payrollemployment exceeded its Q3 2022 level by +0.7% (+138,800 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.0% (that is +1.2 million jobs).

Between the end of June 2023 and the end of September 2023, private payroll employment was virtually stable: -0.1% (or 17,700 net job destructions) after +0.1% in the previous quarter (that is +12,200 net job creations). It was the second quarter of near-stability after many quarters of rise in 2021 and 2022. Private payrollemployment exceeded its Q3 2022 level by +0.7% (+138,800 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.0% (that is +1.2 million jobs).
Temporary employment decreased for the third consecutive quarter
In Q3 2023, temporary employment decreased for the third consecutive quarter: -1.9% (or -15,300 jobs) after -0.5% in Q2 2023 (or -4,300 jobs) and -2.5% in Q1 2023 (or -20,400 jobs). Temporary employment was sharply below its Q3 2022 level (-4.7%), but was slightly below its pre-sanitary crisis level (-0.5%).
As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).
Excluding temporary work, private payroll moderately rose in the industry and decreased in the construction and non market services
In Q3 2023, private payroll employment excluding temporary work in agriculture decreased but less than the previous quarter (-0.2% after -0.8%). It remained above its previous year level (+3.6%).
Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) rose at the same moderate pace as in the second quarter of 2023: +0.2% (that is +6,400 jobs after +5,300 jobs in the previous quarter). It topped its Q3 2022 level by 0.9% (or +28,300 jobs). After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q4 2021, it exceeded it by +2.2% (+68,300 net job creations since the end of 2019).
In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) decreased again in Q3 2023: -0.3% (that is -4,800 jobs) after -0.5% (or -7,300 jobs). It was below its Q3 2022 level (-0.6%; that is -10,300 jobs) but remained well above its pre-sanitary level (+7.1%, that is +104,400 jobs compared to the end of 2019).
In market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was stable in Q3 2023, after +0.2% in Q2 2023 (that is +900 jobs after +21,600 jobs). It topped markedly its Q3 2022 level (+1.1% or +137,600 jobs) and sharply its pre-sanitary level (+7.7% compared to the end of 2019 or +898,300 jobs).
In non-market services,private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) slightly decreased in Q3 2023: -0.2% (or -4,200 jobs) after a stability in Q2 2023. It was above its Q3 2022 level by 0.4% (or +10,600 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 4.3% (or +111,700 jobs).
