In August 2023, the volume of sales in trade grew by 0.3% over a month, after a 0.4% decrease in July.
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. In August 2023, the volume of sales in trade grew by 0.3% over a month, after a 0.4% decrease in July.
In August 2023, sales volume recovered, led mostly by wholesale trade
In August 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles bounced back over a month (+0.7% after ‑0.8% in July). This rebound was mainly due to the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (+3.5% after ‑2.6%) and the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: +1.4% after +1.0%).
The volume of sales started to grow again in August 2023 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.2% after a virtual stability), led by the acceleration in the sale of motor vehicles (+1.8% after +0.8%).
Lastly, the volume of sales fell back in August 2023 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.0% after a virtual stability), both in specialised stores (‑1.5% after +0.3%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑1.0% after +0.8%). The volume of sales was virtually stable in non-specialised stores (‑0.1% after ‑0.3%). Within specialised stores, most of the decrease came from the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: ‑1.5% after +0.8%), automotive fuel (‑3.5% after +0.6%) and cultural and recreation goods (‑3.1% after ‑0.6%).
