The balances of opinion on activity have gone back under their long term average

In October 2023, building construction managers’ opinions about both their past and expected activity have sharply degraded: both balances of opinion have dropped below their long term average and have reached their lowest levels since the end of 2020.

Once again, more business managers than in the previous month have considered the evolution of their company situation to be unpredictable: the balance of opinion on the economic uncertainty has kept on growing.

Business managers are more pessimistic than in July regarding the general prospects of the sector: the corresponding quarterly balance of opinion has dropped and now stands below its long term average for the first time since April 2020.

Activity tendency in building construction

Opinion on demand has degraded again

In October 2023, fewer building contractors than in the previous month have considered the level of their order books to be higher than normal. The corresponding balance of opinion has clearly dropped and is back to his long term average.

Given their staff size, building contractors have considered that their order books provide them with 8.2 months of work, a duration that has slightly decreased compared to the previous month, but that remains above its long term average.

The production capacity utilisation rate has gone back slightly

In October 2023, the production capacity utilisation rate has dropped back slightly: at 91.0%, it remains nonetheless above its long term average (89.0%).

Slightly more business managers than in the previous month have reported facing obstacles limiting their production. At 65%, their share stands at its average level. The proportion of business managers who declared facing a workforce shortage has dropped slightly (41%) while still remaining above its long term average. The proportion of those reporting supply difficulties has risen slightly (8%): its level is close to its average.

The share of companies that have reported to be at the limit of their production capacity (production bottlenecks), that is to say that they could not produce more with their current means if they were to receive more orders, has dipped again but remains well above its average. 23% of business managers considered themselves unable to increase their production in case of additional orders due to workforce shortage and 3% due to supply difficulties, both of which having slightly decreased.

The share of companies that have reported facing recruiting difficulties has dropped back slightly compared to July 2023. However it remains very high.

The balance of opinion on expected prices has continued to drop

In October 2023, business managers are again slighter fewer in number than in September to announce that they will increase their prices over the upcoming three months. The balance of opinion has decreased but remains well above its long term average.

The quarterly balance of opinion on cash flow position has diminished rather significantly, dropping below its long term average. It has reached its lowest level since October 2020.
