The balances of opinion on activity have slightly degraded
In September 2023, building construction managers’ opinions about both their past and expected activity have slightly degraded. On an overall dropping trend for several months, both balances of opinion nevertheless remain above their average levels.
As many business managers as in the previous month have considered the evolution of their company situation to be unpredictable: the balance of opinion on the economic uncertainty felt is stable.

Business managers’ opinion regarding their order book has slightly degraded
In September 2023, slightly less building contractors than in the previous month have considered the level of their order books to be higher than average. The corresponding balance of opinion has dropped back but remains above its long term average.
However, the sector's business managers have said they are more optimistic regarding the work duration provided by their order books. Given their staff size, building contractors have considered that their order books provide them with 8.5 months of work, a duration that has slightly increased compared to the previous month, and that also stands above its long term average.
Supply difficulties have gone back to their long term average
In September 2023, the production capacity utilisation rate has dropped slightly: it stands at 91.4% and remains above its long term average (89.0%).
Slightly more business managers than in the previous month have reported facing obstacles limiting their production. At 64%, their share is almost stable, right below its long term average. The proportion of business managers who declared facing a workforce shortage is stable (42%), well above its long term average level, while the proportion of those reporting supply difficulties has kept on dipping and has gone back to its long term average (6%) for the first time since February 2021.
The share of companies that have reported to be at the limit of their production capacity (production bottlenecks), that is to say that they could not produce more with their current means if they were to receive more orders, has dropped slightly. 25% of business managers considered themselves unable to increase their production in case of additional orders due to workforce shortage and 4% due to supply difficulties.
The balance of opinion regarding expected prices has continued to fall at a slower pace
In September 2023, business managers are again fewer in number than in August to announce that they will increase their prices in the upcoming three months. The corresponding balance of opinion has pursued its drop, at a slower pace than in the previous months. It remains nonetheless above its long term average.
