In Q2 2023, private payroll employment slowed down: +0.1%, after +0.4% (flash estimate) Flash estimate of payroll employment - second quarter 2023
Between the end of March 2023 and the end of June 2023, private payroll employment was virtually stable: +0.1% (or +19,700 net job creations) after +0.4% in the previous quarter (that is +86,800 jobs). It has strongly grown in 2021 and 2022, and exceeded its Q2 2022 level by +1.2% (+249,500 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.2% (that is +1.2 million jobs).
In Q2 2023, private payroll employment was virtually stable (+0.1%), after +0.4% in the previous quarter
Between the end of March 2023 and the end of June 2023, private payroll employment was virtually stable: +0.1% (or +19,700 net job creations) after +0.4% in the previous quarter (that is +86,800 jobs). It has strongly grown in 2021 and 2022, and exceeded its Q2 2022 level by +1.2% (+249,500 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.2% (that is +1.2 million jobs).
Temporary employment decreased again
In Q2 2023, temporary employment decreased again but less than in Q1 2023: -0.8% (or -6,500 jobs) after -2.2% in the previous quarter (or -18,100 jobs). Temporary employment was below its Q2 2022 level by 1.9% but above its pre-sanitary crisis level by +1.5%.
As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).
Excluding temporary work, private payroll slowed down sharply in market services
In Q2 2023, private payroll employment excluding temporary work fell back in agriculture (-1.0% after +0.1%). It remained above its previous year level (+1.3%).
Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) rose at the same moderate pace as in the first quarter of 2023: +0.2% (that is +6,400 after +7,500 jobs in the previous quarter). It topped its Q2 2022 level by 1.1% (or +35,300 jobs). After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q4 2021, it exceeded it by +2.0% (+62,300 net job creations since the end of 2019).
In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) decreased in Q2 2023: -0.3% (that is -4,800 jobs) after -0.1% (or -1,500 jobs). It nearly was at the same level as in Q2 2022 (-0.1% that is -1,200 jobs) and was well above its pre-sanitary level by +7.5% (+110,800 jobs compared to the end of 2019).
In market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) slowed down sharply in Q2 2023: +0.2% after +0.7% in Q1 2023 (or +25,900 after +85,900 jobs). It topped its Q2 2022 level (+1.6% or +201,700 jobs) and its pre-sanitary level (+7.7% compared to the end of 2019 or +899,600 jobs).
In non-market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) slowed down too in Q2 2023: +0.1% (or +1,900 jobs) after +0.5% in Q1 2023 (that is +12,700 jobs). It was above its Q2 2022 level by 0.9% (or +25,000 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 5.0% (or +131,800 jobs).
