In September 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises continued to grow month on month (+1.5% after +2.1% in August seasonally and working-day adjusted) thus recording a fourth consecutive month of increase. Conventional business births bounced back (+2.6% after -0.6%) whereas micro-entrepreneurs' registrations slowed down (+0.9% after +3.8%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months (October 2021 to September 2022) decreased slightly (-0.5%) compared to that of the same period one year earlier (October 2020 to September 2021).

Rebound in business births in trade over a month

In September 2022, business births bounced back sharply over a month in trade, including trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+5.6% after -0.8%). Business births also grew in real estate activities (+11.3%), in accommodation and food service activities (+9.8%) and in construction (+3.4%). However, they fell back in transportation and storage (-5.5% after +9.0%) and in business support activities (-1.1% after +3.8%).

Sharp increase in business births over the last three months

The raw number of business births over the last three months (July 2022 to September 2022) increased sharply, in comparison with the same months of 2021 (+7.0%), driven by the sharp increase in micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations (+9.0%) and in company births (+6.2%). On the other hand, conventional sole proprietorships’ births fell slightly (-0.6%).

Over this period, business support activities made the largest positive contribution to the overall increase (+10,700 business births compared to the same months of 2021, representing a contribution of +4.6 points)*. Within this sector, the rise was due in particular to that of “business and other management consultancy activities” (+3,200 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Slight decrease in business births over the last twelve months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months (October 2021 to September 2022) decreased again (-0.5% year on year), but at a slightly slower pace than in the previous month (-1.8%). Conventional sole proprietorships’ births decreased more sharply (-10.7%) than micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations (-0.8%). Conversely, company births increased sharply (+5.3%).

Over this period, the fall is particularly noticeable in transportation and storage activities (-36.6% year on year).

Revisions

The monthly variation in the overall number of business births in August 2022 has been revised upwards by 0.2 points, to +2.1% instead of +1.9%, due to the revision of the raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.

The business births data are build from the Register of Enterprises and Establishments (REE). This register is itself supplied with data from Sirene and enriched with elements from the Sirus statistical register.

The definition of creation adopted by INSEE is based on the concept defined by Eurostat, to harmonize and compare European data.

The appearance of a market producer legal unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources.

The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.

From the January 2022 publication, business births are calculated according to a revised scheme. This has led to an increase in the level of historic series of business births.
