Energy: rebound

Energy consumption rebounded in April (+0.7% after -2.8%). This is explained by the rebound in gas and electricity consumption (+2% after -1.3%), probably linked to below average temperatures in April 2022. Fuel consumption decreased but less strongly than in March (-0.9% in April after -4.5%).

Breakdown of energy

  • Source: INSEE

Engineered goods: slight decrease

Consumption of engineered goods decreased again in April (-0.3% after -0.6%). This slight decrease is mainly explained by a further decline in consumption of durable goods (-0.7% after -1.7%). Consumption of "other engineered goods" continues to decrease very slightly (-0.2% after -0.2%). Consumption of clothing and textiles increased by 0.5%.

Durables: further decline

Consumption of durable goods continues to decline, but less strongly than in March (-0.7% after -1.7%). Consumption of transportation equipment is down again (-1.0% after -2.9%), with a less marked decline in car sales. Consumption of housing equipment also decreased (-0.1% after -0.4%), due to a sharp drop in furniture purchases, while consumption of household appliances, electronic products and communication equipment increased. Consumption of other durable goods continues to decline, with a drop in jewelry purchases in particular.

Textile-clothing: slight increase

Consumption of clothing and textiles increased again by 0.5% in April, driven in part by an increase in purchases of shoes.

Other engineered goods: very slight decline

Consumption of "other engineered goods" continued to decline very slightly (-0.2% after -0.2%), with notably a drop in purchases of perfumes.
