Warning: new format in touristic attendance quarterly publication

Sanitary crisis deeply disrupted touristic attendance surveys. Lighter survey, less detailed, were implemented during french confinments, in order to maintain continuity in attendance statistics when touristic accommodation were highly constrained. Therefore, Insee has been able to publish quarterly and seasonal results and annual studies. Considering the outstanding fall in touristic attendance through 2020 and 2021, quarterly results are compared to the same quarter in 2019, allowing comparisons to pre-crisis levels

In Q4 2021, occupancy in tourist collective accommodation – except for campsites, measured in overnight stays, remained by 8.6% below its Q4 2019 level. Attendance still failed by 12.4% in hotels, when in holiday and other shortstay accommodation (HOSSA) it has exceeded its pre-crisis level (+2.9%).

Overnight stays in hotels did not came back to their pre-crisis level

As during summer 2021, hotel occupancy in quarter four was driven by residents, whose overnight stays came close to their pre-crisis level (−3.0%). Non-resident occupancy remained far below (−32.6%).

Resident customers’ come back mainly benefitted high-end hotels. The number of overnight stays increased by 650,000 in 4-5 star hotels (+9.0%) compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. But non resident attendance sharply declined (by 2,100,000 overnight stays), and remained far below its pre-cris level (−33.8%), causing high-end hotels attendance to remain 11 points below Q4 2019’s level. The drop was lesser in 3 star hotels (−6.9%), yet losing 1,200,000 overnight stays.

Attendance fall was important in 1-2 star hotels, whose number of overnight stays decline by 1,600,000 (−16.0% from its pre-crisis level), and unclassified hotels (loss of 1,500,000 overnight stays, −25.2%). Both cases result from sharp decline in non-resident occupancy and significant decrease in that of residents.

In Île-de-France, hotel attendance didn’t match its pre-crisis level (−21.1%), in resident occupancy and even less in non-resident’s. Attendance’s decline was less significant in hotels from provincal urban areas (−10.5%).

In coastlines areas, the decline compared to the fourth quarter of 2019’s attendance was less stronger than in Île-de-France, the growth in resident overnight stays (+8.9%) partly offseting non-resident fall (−37.1%).

Revision of series concerning hotels and holidays and other shorstay accommodation: As of January 1, 2019, data from non-responding hotels are imputed using a new method, based on their characteristics. This new method of imputing non-response tends to slightly reduce the total number of overnight stays (−0.9% in the fourth quarter of 2018) but has no impact on quarterly trends. This method was also implemented for HOSSA in 2020. This publication’s data for the year 2019 were re-calculated in order to be properly compared to 2021’s data.
