In November 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises fell back sharply (–3.5% after +6.7% in October seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations declined more sharply (–4.9% after +8.1%) than conventional business births (–1.0% after +4.3%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months increased strongly (+19.0%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Sharp decreased in business births in business support activities

In November 2021, the number of business births decreased sharply in business support activities (–4.4%) and in the education; human health and social work activities (–4.8%).

Decrease in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (September to November) decreased in comparison with the same months one year ago (–3.3%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations decreased sharply (–5.2%), as well as conventional sole proprietorships’ births (–11.1%). However, companies’ births went up (+4.9%).

Transportation and storage was the sector that contributed the most to the overall fall (–8,600 business births, which comes to a contribution of –3.3 points)*. Within it, the strongest decrease was in other postal and courier activities (–9,200 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago, which had been characterized by a sharp increase in this sub-sector).

Sharp increase in business births over the twelve last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up sharply (+19.0%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+18.3%), and even more companies’ births (+26.7%) and, to a lesser extent, sole proprietorships’ births (+3.4%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In November 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs in the business births over the last twelve months decreased slightly and represents 64.5%.
