In October 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises bounced back sharply (+6.7% after –1.9% in September seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations rebounded (+8.1% after –3.7%) while conventional business births increased again (+4.4% after +1.4%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months increased strongly (+21.0%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Increase in business births in business support activities

In October 2021, the number of business births increased sharply in business support activities (+11.5%) and in household services (+13.0%).

Decrease in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (August to October) decreased in comparison with the same months one year ago (–1.8%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations decreased (–2.6%), as well as conventional sole proprietorships’ births (–9.4%). However, companies’ births went up (+3.4%).

Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles was the sector that contributed the most to the overall fall (–6,200 business births, which comes to a contribution of –2.6 points)*. Within it, the strongest decrease was in retail sale via home-shopping by general catalog (–2,650 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago, which had been characterized by a sharp increase in this sub-sector).

Sharp increase in business births over the twelve last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up sharply (+21.0%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+21.8%) as well as companies’ births (+25.8%) and, to a lesser extent, sole proprietorships’ births (+3.5%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In October 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs in the business births over the last twelve months decreased slightly and represents 64.7%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in September 2021 has been lowered by 0.4 points to –1.9% instead of –1.5%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
