In September 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased (–1.5% after a stability in August seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations fell back (–3.0% after +3.8%) while conventional business births bounced back (+1.1% after –6.1%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months increased strongly (+23.0%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Decrease in business births in transportation and storage over one month

In September 2021, the number of business births fell back in transportation and storage (–6.4%) and in household services (–5.5%).

Decrease in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (July to September) decreased in comparison with the same months one year ago (–2.4%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations decreased (–4.5%), as well as conventional sole proprietorships’ births (–9.1%). However, companies’ births went up (+5.5%).

Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles was the sector that contributed the most to the overall fall (–5,900 business births, which comes to a contribution of –2.6 points)*. Within it, the strongest decrease was in retail sale via home-shopping by general catalog (–2,300 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago, which had been characterized by a sharp increase in this sub-sector).

Sharp increase in business births over the twelve last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up sharply (+23.0%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+24.5%) as well as companies’ births (+26.9%) and, to a lesser extent, sole proprietorships’ births (+3.7%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In September 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs’ in the business births over the last twelve months slightly decrease and represents 64.8%.

The variation in the overall number of business births in August 2021 has been lowered by 0.1 points to stability instead of +0.1%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
