Near stability in business births in August 2021; sharp increase over the twelve last months Enterprise births - August 2021

In August 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises remained almost stable (+0.1% after –1.0% in July seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations bounced back (+3.8% after –1.0%) while conventional business births decreased sharply (–5.9% after –1.0%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months increased strongly (+26.3%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Increase in business births in transportation and storage over one month

In August 2021, the number of business births increased sharply in transportation and storage (+18.3%) and in “other services activities” (+3.1%). The number of business births decreased in education, human health and social work activities (–12.3%).

Increase in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (June to August) increased in comparison with the same months one year ago (+3.6%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations decreased (–0.5%), as well as conventional sole proprietorships’ births (–4.2%). However, companies’ births went up sharply (+16.8%).

Business support activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall rise (+5,600 business births, which comes to a contribution of +2.6 points)*. Within it, the strongest increase was in public relations and communication activities (+1,500 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago).

Sharp increase in business births over the twelve last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up sharply (+26.3%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+28.7%) as well as companies’ births (+28.8%) and, to a lesser extent, sole proprietorships’ births (+5.1%).

In August 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs’ in the business births over the last twelve months remained unchanged and represents 64.9%.

For further information

The business births data are build from the Register of Enterprises and Establishments (REE), from Sirene register information. The definition of creation adopted by INSEE is based on the concept defined by EUROSTAT, to harmonize and compare European data.

The appearance of a legal operating unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources. The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
