In July 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased (–1.0% after +0.7% in June seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased (–0.9% after –0.2%) while conventionnal business births downturned (–1.1% after +2.2%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months increases strongly (+27.7%), notably due to the particulary low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Decrease in business births in industry and construction over one month

In July 2021, the number of business births decreased in industry (–10.1%) and in construction (–10.1%). On the other hand, the number of business births increased again in education, human health and social work activities (+10.6%).

Sharp increase in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (May to July) increased sharply in comparison with the same months one year ago (+16.9%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations went up sharply (+11.1%), as well as companies’s births (+36.2%) and conventionnal sole proprietorships’ births (+5.4%).

Business support activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall rise (+9,000 business births, which comes to a contribution of +4.4 points)*. Within it, the strongest increase was in public relations and communication activities (+1,300 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago).

Increase in business births over the twelve last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up (+27.7%), notably due to the particulary low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased more strongly (+30.5%) as well as companies’ births (+29.9%) and, in a lesser extent, sole proprietorships’ births (+5.5%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In July 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs’ in the businesses births over the last twelve months decreased slightly and represents 64.9%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in July 2021 has been lowered by 0.1 points to +0.7% instead of +0.8%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
