In May 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises fell back (–4.0% after +1.9% in April seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased sharply (–7.3% after +0.7%) while conventionnal business births increased (+2.1% after +4.0%).

In mid-March 2021, an improvement in the coding procedure of the economic activity of business births in the Sirene register disrupted the series in transport and storage activities and in accommodation and food service activities. Indeed, the procedure used for coding the economic activity of new enterprises has been improved in the business register Sirene. So, enterprises engaged in meal delivery are now all correctly classified in other postal and mail activities, including home delivery, while some were previously incorrectly classified in fast-food activities.

In May 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises fell back (–4.0% after +1.9% in April seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased sharply (–7.3% after +0.7%) while conventionnal business births increased (+2.1% after +4.0%).

Decrease in business births in transport and storage activities over one month

In May 2021, the number of business births decreased in transport and storage activities (–13.9%), in education, human health and social work activities (–11.6%) and in manufacturing activities (–10.4%). On the other hand, the number of business births increased in accommodation and food service activities (+12.4%).

Sharp increase in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (March to May) increased sharply in comparison with the same months one year ago (+91.2%). This particularly strong increase is explained by the high number of busines births in the first quarter of 2021 but above all by the abnormally low number of business births in the first quarter of 2020 due to the first lockdown. Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations went up sharply (+93.8%), as well as companies’s births (+97.1%) and conventionnal sole proprietorships’ births (+58.7%).

Transportation and storage activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall rise (+30,000 business births, which comes to a contribution of +21.4 points)*. Within it, the strongest increase was in other postal and mail activities (+27,600 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago). This upsurge is mainly due to the development in home delivery.

Increase in business births over the twelve last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up (+31.0%). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased more strongly (+37.2%) than companies’ births (+27.3%), and sole proprietorships’ births (+4.9%).

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In May 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs’ in the businesses births over the last twelve months is virtually stable and represents 65.5%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in April 2021 has been increased by 0.1 points to +1.9% instead of +1.8%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
