In January 2021, the balance of opinion of business managers in the building construction industry on their upcoming activity for the next three months has increased again, after a sharp rebound in December 2020. The one on the level of the order books has improved also.
In January, business managers are more optimistic than in December on their upcoming activity
In January 2021, more business managers in the building construction industry than in the previous month have indicated an increase in their upcoming activity for the next three months: the corresponding balance has increased again and gone above its long-term average.
However, the opinion of business managers on their activity over the last three months has kept deteriorating: the corresponding balance of opinion has fallen for the third consecutive month. Their opinion on the general outlook for the sector, measured quarterly, is practically unchanged compared to October 2020: in January 2021, this balance of opinion is virtually stable above its average.

In January 2021, the business managers are more numerous than last month to consider that the level of their order books is higher than normal: the corresponding balance of opinion has recovered and returned a little above its long-term average. Otherwise, given their present staff size, business managers consider that their order books provide 7.9 months of work, a time span that remains significantly above its long-term average (5.8 months).
Pressure on productive capacities are more intense
In January 2021, the production capacity utilisation rate has increased again. At 90.9%, it stands above its long-term average (88.7%). At the same time, the production bottlenecks have become more important after easing last month: a little more than 40% of the business managers have declared them, a share higher than its long-term average (33%). The share of business managers reporting to be hampered from increasing their production due to workforce shortage has bounced back slightly.
The balance on the cash-flow position has recovered sharply
In January 2021, significantly more business managers than in October 2020 have reported an improvement in their cash-flow position. The corresponding balance has recovered sharply and has returned to its long-term average. At the same time, fewer business managers than in October have reported a lengthening of payment periods from their clients. The corresponding balance has returned below its long term average.
Otherwise, the business managers are more numerous than last month to announce that they will increase their prices over the next three months. The balance of opinion on expected change in prices for the next three months has recovered sharply, returning above its long-term average
