2020- n° 212In August 2020, the opinion of business managers in the building industry about their
recent activity has improved again Monthly survey of building - August 2020
In August 2020, the opinion of business managers in the building industry about their recent activity and about their order books has continued to improve. The balance of opinion on expected activity stays high, despite a little fall back.
Since the definitives data of April 2020, the correction mode of non-response has been modified compared to the previous method which was to carry on past answers from non-responding companies. We have, since then, considered that non-responding units would have answered as their elementary stratum’s units average.
Otherwise, all balances of opinion from the survey are published in this Informations Rapides and in the complementary chronological series available online. However, during the health crisis, it appeared that the composite business climate indicator, usually calculated from some of these balances of opinion, tended to smooth the fluctuations in the economic activity measured in building construction. This is why an overhaul of this synthetic indicator is currently being studied in order to, if possible, improve its predictive qualities.
In August 2020, the opinion of business managers in the building industry about their recent activity and about their order books has continued to improve. The balance of opinion on expected activity stays high, despite a little fall back.
The balance of opinion on past activity has continued to rally
In August 2020, the business managers in the building industry are, for the second consecutive month, much more numerous than in the previous month to report an increase in their activity prospects for the last three months: the corresponding balance has risen significantly again, while remaining above its long-term average.
However, business managers in the building industry are a little less optimistic than in July about their expected activity over the next three months: the corresponding balance of opinion has fallen back slightly, while remaining clearly above its long-term average.

The opinion on the order books recovers gradually
In August 2020, more business managers than in July have considered that their order books are higher than normal: the corresponding balance of opinion has increased again and has returned above its average. Furthermore, the business managers consider that, given their present staff size, their order books provide 8.2 months of work, the highest point since the beginning of the series (1975).
The production bottlenecks have increased: they concern 39% of the business managers, more than in July. In particular, the share of business managers reporting to be hampered from increasing their production due to workforce shortage has increased again, very slightly, and then remains above its long-term average.
Fewer business managers than in July have planed to increase their prices
In August 2020, fewer business managers than in July have reported that they will increase their prices. The corresponding balance has fallen back and has moved just below its long-term average.
