In July 2020, again significantly more business managers in the building construction industry than last month have anticipated an increase in their upcoming activity for the next three months.
Companies' responses were collected between 27 June and 20 July 2020, both online and, for the first time since March, through paper forms. Therefore, the answer rate has further recovered from its April low point and is now nearing the rate usual prior to the health crisis. Furthermore, since the definitive data of April, the correction mode of non-response has been modified. Whereas the previous method was to carry on past answers from non-responding companies, we have been considering in April’s data update, May, June and July that non-responding units would have answered as their elementary stratum’s units average.

In July 2020, again significantly more business managers in the building construction industry than last month have anticipated an increase in their upcoming activity for the next three months.
Business managers are more optimistic on their upcoming activity
In July 2020, in the building construction industry, more business managers than in the previous month have indicated an increase in their activity for the next three months: the corresponding balance has sharply increased again, continuing the very strong rally of May and June after the collapse of April. Then, this balance has strengthened its position above its long-term average.
In addition, the business managers are less negative than in June regarding their past activity (over the past three months, so mostly during lockdown): the corresponding balance of opinion has recovered sharply but remains far below its level before crisis.
Otherwise, the opinion of business managers on the general outlook for the sector, measured quarterly, is very linked to the health crisis timeline: in July, this balance of opinion has bounced back considerably in comparison to April and has returned above its long-term average.

The opinion of business managers about the future development in employment has improved again
Since March 2020, the balances of opinion about employment have been fluctuating according to the health crisis timeline, with a time lag between past employment and employment prospects.
In July 2020, the employment prospects for the next three months have improved again, after a low point in April-May: the corresponding balance now exceeds its long-term average.
The balance of opinion on the change in the workforce size over the past three months has bounced back. However, it stays well below its long-term average.

Th opinion on order books is less negative
In July 2020, fewer business managers than in the previous month have considered that their order books are less filled than normal. The corresponding balance of opinion is on the rise, moving closer to its long-term average. Given their present staff size, business managers consider that their order books provide 8.0 months of work, a little more the last month and significantly more than the long-term average (5.7 months).
In July 2020, the production bottlenecks have eased in comparison to June. A little over a third of business managers have reported some, a proportion close to the long-term average, and inferior to its level before crisis.
However, the share of business managers reporting to be unable to increase their production due to staff shortages has increased after two months of decrease. This share stays below its level before the lockdown.
The cash-flow position of business managers has recovered but remains deteriorated
In July 2020, more business managers than in April have reported an improvement in their cash-flow position. The corresponding balance, has recovered but remains below its long-term average and its level before crisis. At the same time, fewer business managers than in April have reported a lengthening of payment periods from their clients. The corresponding balance has decreased to a level close to its January 2020 level, hitting its long term average.
Otherwise, for the third consecutive month, more business managers than in June have announced that they will increase their prices over the next three months. The corresponding balance has slightly increased again and stands above its long-term average.
