Fall in business start-ups in April 2020 Enterprise births - April 2020

In April 2020, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased strongly (–33.5% after –25.4% in March, seasonally and working-day adjusted). In the context of the population containment due to Covid-19, conventional businesses start-ups collapsed (–42.1% after –30.1%) and micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased strongly (–24.0% after –19.5%).

Warning:

Due to technical difficulties related to data transmissions between Insee and a business formality center in February, some births of sole proprietorships in February have been registered in March, in particular micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations. The delay lightens slightly the decrease between February and March, and accentuates slightly the decrease between March and April, in particular for micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations.

Fall in business set-ups in all economic activities

In April 2020, the number of business births decreased strongly in all economic activities. The fall is the heaviest in accommodation and food supply activities (–52.9%), household services (–45.1)% and real estate activities (–44.8%). The sectors that contributed the most to the overall rise are business support activities (–7.9 points)*, household services (–4.7 points), trade (–3.6 points) and construction (–3.4 points).

Collapse in business set-ups in transportation and storage over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months decreased strongly (–21.6%, after –2.7%% in March). Transportation and storage was the sector that contributed the most to the overall decrease (–9 500 business births, which comes to a contribution of –4.6 points)*. Within it, the strongest decrease was in other postal and mail activities including home delivery (–7 300 business start-ups over the last three months).

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up (+5.4%%), but the containment impact is more and more perceptible with a strong slow-down in comparison with the number of business start-ups totted up in March (+11.8%) and in February (+15.3%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Less than a half of business set-ups are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In April 2020, in raw data, the share of micro–entrepreneurs' registrations in the businesses set up over the last twelve months rose slightly to 46.9%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in March 2020 has been inceased by 0.1 points to –25.4% instead of –25.5%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
