According to the managers in retail trade and in trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has fallen steeply in March 2020. The composite indicator that measures it, calculated since January 1991, has lost 13 points. The former declines of the same order of magnitude are those observed in October 2008 (-13 points) and in June 1993 (-12 points). At 92, it has fallen significantly below its long-term average.
Given the context of the fight against the spread of COVID-19, the statistics published in this issue of Informations Rapides may be less accurate than usual.
Companies’ responses were collected between 26 February and 23 March 2020. However, as of 14 March, only the responses received via the internet could be processed. In addition, many companies may have encountered difficulties in responding to the survey. Most responses were collected before 16 March 2020, the date from which schools have been closed.

Very sharp declinefor the general outlook
In March 2020, the balance of opinion of business managers on the general business outlook on their sector has declined very strongly, as well as, to a lesser extent, the one on ordering intentions. The balance of opinion on the level of stocks has increased, albeit moderately. The one on cash position, bimonthly, has been virtually stable since January 2020.

The balances of opinion of business managers on recent and future change in employment have sharply declined and deviated further from their long-term average.
In retail trade, as well as in trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has fallen abruptly
In March 2020, the business climate has deteriorated abruptly in retail trade and stands very far below its average. However, the quite volatile balance of opinion on expected sales of food has increased strongly (+32 points in one month).
The business climate has also deteriorated strongly in retail and repair of motor vehicles. Otherwise, this indicator has been revised upwards by two points for February 2020, due to the integration of late answers from companies.
