Slight downturn in business start-ups in February 2019 Enterprise births - February 2019

In February 2019, the number of business births for all enterprises fell back (-1.1% after +13.6% in January, seasonally and working-day adjusted). Conventional businesses start-ups increased (+1.5% after +4.4%) and micro-entrepreneurs' registrations dropped (-3.8% after +25.0%).

+17.0% over the twelve last months

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last twelve months was still inscreasing sharply (+17.0% after +17.0% in January and +16.9% in December). All the types of business start-ups increased: micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (+28.1%), conventional sole proprietorship start-ups (+16.8%) and, to a lesser extent, company births (+3.0%).

Upsurge of business setp-ups in transportation and storage over the three last months

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last three months went up sharply (+15.6% over one year). The sector “Transportation and storage” was the one that contributed the most to this rise (contribution of 4.5 points)*. Over the last three months and compared to the same months a year earlier, the number of creators grew by 7,600 in this sector (of which +7,300 in other postal and mail activities including home delivery).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

More than two business set-ups out of five are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In February 2019, the share of micro–entrepreneurs' registrations in the businesses set up over the last twelve months grew for the sixteenth month in a row and reached 45.5%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in January 2019 has been lowered by 0.2 points to +13.6% due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.

The appearance of a legal operating unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources. The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
