Slight rise in business start-ups in December 2018 Enterprise births - December 2018

In December 2018, the number of business births for all enterprises increased slightly (+0.3% after −5.6% in November, seasonally and working-day adjusted). Conventional businesses start-ups dropped (−1.1% after −0.3%) while micro-entrepreneurs' registrations rebounded (+2.1% after −11.4%).

+16.9% over the twelve last months

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last twelve months slowed down slightly (+16.9% after +17.3% in November and +18.5% in October). All the types of business start-ups increased: micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (+27.5%), conventional sole proprietorship start-ups (+20.0%) and, to a lesser extent, company births (+1.6%).

Upsurge of business setp-ups in transportation and storage over the three last months

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last three months went up sharply (+13.5% over one year). The sector “Transportation and storage” was the one that contributed the most to this rise (rise by +8,000 business start-ups, which comes to a contribution of 6.0 points)1. Over the last three months and compared to the same months a year earlier, the number of creators grew by 8,000 in this sector (of which +7,200 in other postal and mail activities including home delivery).

More than two business set-ups out of five are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In December 2018, the share of micro–entrepreneurs' registrations in the businesses set up over the last twelve months grew for the fourteenth month in a row and reached 44.6%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in November 2018 has been lowered by 0.3 points to −5.6% due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.

For more information - Source and definitions

The business start-ups data are build from the Register of Enterprises and Establishments (REE), from Sirene register information. The definition of creation adopted by INSEE is based on the concept defined by EUROSTAT, to harmonize and compare European data.

The appearance of a legal operating unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources. The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
